For Our Kids intervenes in landmark climate lawsuit led by Ontario youth

For Our Kids Toronto and For Our Kids national are thrilled to share that we’ve been granted intervenor status in the youth-led climate lawsuit Mathur et. al. v. Her Majesty in Right of Ontario.

7 young people are taking Doug Ford and his government to court, for weakening provincial climate targets and violating Ontarians’ Charter-protected rights to life, liberty, and security of the person. Meet the brave young plaintiffs bringing this case to court and hear more about why this case is so important:

As intervenors, we’ll be representing the voice of parents in the proceedings and bringing our unique views and perspectives to the legal issues before the Court. We’ll be making written and oral arguments in July and September, highlighting how climate change is affecting our ability to protect our kids. Stay tuned for updates!

As our own Brianne Whyte, mother, teacher and organizer with For Our Kids Toronto explains: “the science is clear – if we want our kids to have a liveable climate we need to reduce emissions and prevent warming above 1.5 degrees Celsius. Young people will experience disproportionate physical, social and psychological harms from the climate crisis, and the Ontario government has a legal responsibility to protect our kids; both their Charter rights and their lives”.
